I offer a few critiques, with the goal of helping you improve these papers:

1) It’s not clear to me that you addressed the original assignment of “compare an element to the whole”. Which element did you choose? How did it relate? The only thing I can think of is “cognitive dissonance” as it applied in the immediate term vs. the long term. If so, it wasn’t clear that you were doing that.

2) This paper seemed to be more about your feelings than it was about the painting itself. I believe that the viewer is a critical component of all art, but in this case I felt like you were exploring yourself more than the painting. You did an awesome job describing the painting (lighting, clothing, etc.) but that part felt like filler in between the bits about how you felt.

3) It amuses me a little that you picked a painting where the protagonist was named ‘Judith’ and she was shown having recently removed a head

Take all the points above with a large grain of salt – I’m very glad that it’s you having to write these papers, and not me

1) Agreed. The first draft did exactly what was asked, focusing on the sword, except that after two pages I had nothing else to say. The new approach was suggested by my instructor to help me say more. So I expect her to be sympathetic to it!

2) That’s interesting, because I could take or leave the painting. It’s the only one of the choices that was even mildly interesting. I had to exaggerate the number of shits I gave about it in order to be able to write a paper.

3) No idea what you’re talking about, no sir!

I’ve found someone who apparently likes to write about art, and he’s good at it. Maybe he’ll be of interest to you: lines and colors.
