Doug is in the golden goose room with his clipboard. Doug's clipboard is never a good sign. The goose is stood on the table looking at Doug. A bowl of food is on the table next to the goose. "If I reduce food costs per half," Doug muses. "We'll increase the golden egg margin by 3%." Doug switches out the larger bowl of food with one much smaller. This will save the company a lot of money. Doug returns the next day to find the goose on its back, its legs stiffly pointing toward the ceiling.

It's hard to resolve major outages when you rely only on centralized command. Distributed debugging and strong psychological safety empower the right person to fix issues, even if they're outside the war room. Liz Fong-Jones shared a Google Cloud outage story where this happened.
