System Administration: Week 10: Backups, Part I

In this video, we begin our discussion of backups by covering some core concepts and terminology, looking at full vs. incremental vs. differential backups and the difference between long-term storage and disaster recovery to recovery of files due to more localized data loss.

Running Podman :podman: in production for years now, and I don't miss the Docker daemon one bit.

I just published a deep dive on managing OCI containers the Unix way: daemonless, rootless, and natively integrated with systemd via Quadlets.

            I cover:
            - Real secrets management
            - Auto-updates via systemd timers
            - The Docker compatibility layer

This is the guide I wish I had when making the switch.

Distributed debugging and strong psychological safety empower the right person to fix issues, even if they're outside the war room. Liz Fong-Jones shared a Google Cloud outage story where this happened.

This week, we're discussing a few core concepts in software engineering, the evolution of your typical sysadmin's tool chest from shell aliases and one-off scripts to system utilities shared with the org to full fledged software components. We also cover good coding practices, bug reporting, commit messages, ... and, ugh, how all that is touched by AI now and what that means for us.

I'll try porting a server I've defined with Ansible to Pulumi and see what my first impression is. First, I need to get installed and choose a language to code in. 🧵

TL;DR перевода статьи Boris Tane: SDLC is dead.
