Monday's Prom sounds interesting. I saw Abel Selaocoe premier his own cello concerto with the Aurora Orchestra in the Edinburgh Festival last year, and was very impressed.

Definitely one to listen on catch up! (I was at a jazz gig on Monday - it is the entity Jazz Festival, after all!)

今日はヨゼフ・シュトラウスの命日。1870年、楽旅に出張したワルシャワで脳卒中と見られる発作を起こし、ウィーンに辛うじて帰宅したものの、自宅で息を引き取る。享年42。

今だったらやっぱり「過労死」と表現するのが適切か。元々体力的には弱かったが、作曲と演奏活動にかなり無理をしていたらしい。

現在の墓はウィーン中央墓地の父ヨハンの墓の向かいに位置している。

I just received a CD of two more of Louis Spohr’s symphonies — I fell in love with the Fourth a couple years ago. The № 6 has the title “Historical Symphony in the Style and Taste of Four Different Periods.” The first movement is from the age of Bach & Handel, 2nd from that of Haydn & Mozart, 3rd from that of Beethoven, and fourth from “the very latest period.” I look forward to seeing how authentic he could manage to be.

Spohr’s dates are 1784–1859; compare with Beethoven’s 1770–1827.

In my opinion, Spohr is one of the most underrated early-romantic composers.
