今日はニコライ・リムスキー＝コルサコフの誕生日。1844年生まれ。
チフヴィンという、サンクトペテルブルクの東200kmほどにある町で、軍人の家に生まれ、幼少期はむしろ軍人としての教育を受けている。ピアノの手解きを受けたのが15歳、その後もバラキレフの指導を受けるなどの訓練で音楽へと転身する。
リムスキー＝コルサコフの作品目録に吹奏楽をバックにした協奏的作品（トロンボーン、クラリネット、オーボエ）があるのは、当初軍楽隊を指揮していたことと関係がある。

今日はアレクサンダー・フォン・ツェムリンスキーの命日。1942年没、享年70。
最近は時折演奏会で作品が取り上げられることもあるが、一般的にはあまり知られていないと言うべきか。アルマ・シントラーと恋仲になったのに振られてしまい、マーラーと結婚したことで名前が出る方が多いかも知れない。その時にアルマや周囲からツェムリンスキーの容姿について悪く言われたことが本人を痛く傷つけたと言われている。
後に「こびと（王女の誕生日）」という歌劇を書いているが、醜い姿のこびとが王女たちに笑われた挙句、鏡で自分の姿を見て悲しみのあまりに死んでしまう筋書きに、アルマに振られたツェムリンスキーの姿を重ねて見るのは穿ち過ぎか。
ユダヤ人だったためにナチスから逃れてアメリカに逃れているが、英語がわからなかったために殆ど活動できずに終わった。ニューヨーク州ラーチモントには死の４日前に移住してきたという。https://www.zemlinsky.at/en/biography/new-york-1938-1942

Thoughts on the time signature of #Rachmaninov's "#IsleOfTheDead"? The score says 5/8, but it's really alternating 2/8 and 3/8 in some places and alternating 3/8 and 2/8 in others. Must be a nightmare for the conductor.
