I heard for the second time this evening John Rutter’s setting of Emily Dickinson’s poem Hope is the thing with feathers.

I know it is eminently singable, as all Rutter is. But it is one spoonful of sugar too sweet, as Rutter usually is.

I read the poem with a more cool, still voice, looking back from outside, and there is more darkness in it than Rutter painted.
