Today in Labor History February 12, 1889: Antonín Dvořák's Jakobín premiered at the National Theater in Prague. The three-act opera was one of Dvořák's peasant operas. Marie Červinková-Riegrová wrote the libretto, based on the story "At the Ducal Court," by Alois Jirásek. In the story, the Count disowns his son, Bohuš, for his alleged ties with the French Revolutionaries known as Jacobins.

@feinstruktur One challenge is that even after 115+ years audiences still haven't taken to it much (outside of the academic bubble). It's rare to hear a classical-music performer mention atonal/12-tone without complaining about how hard it is to get audiences to listen to it.

That means that advocates still get to pretend that they're outsiders or avant-garde, even though they're following a well-trodden path over a century old. 🤷

haven't posted any new Literally Classical Older School JRPG in a while: here's "Ruins of Athens: The Chorus of Dervishes" by Beethoven as "Boss Battle: Magnificent"

I favor less-known composers for this collection where possible; but this piece, I feel, is not too well-known despite being by Beethoven

Over 115 years have passed since Schoenberg premiered the first well-known atonal pieces. It's as old now as Mozart's music was in Schoenberg's time.

Perhaps it's time to stop thinking of atonal music as new or cutting-edge. (?)
