クラリネット・ソナタはクラリネット奏者のレパートリーとして定着しているけれど、最晩年の作。新作の歌劇を手掛け始めた矢先の死だった。

That famous Intermezzo from Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana was on the radio earlier. I have played it many times. I’ve never seen / heard the whole opera.

This means I don’t know anything about the context, nothing about the emotions that it is there to reinforce.

Am I getting from it what Mascagni intended? Not all of it, and possibly none of it; I could even be getting it wrong.

This is not the only bleeding chunk of opera about which I am woefully ignorant. I don’t know the context of Nessun dorma, for instance.

I’ve learned from experience with other music that knowing the whole work makes it infinitely more rewarding, like seeing a picture in colour instead of monochrome.

I feel sad about these orphaned chunks, unable to give everything they have to so many in the audience, who are getting only the Reader’s Digest version.

No solution, of course, except to listen to the whole piece! It’s always worth the time.
