今日はミヒャエル・ギーレンの誕生日。1927年、ドレスデンの生まれ。第二次大戦中にアルゼンチンに移住してエーリヒ＆カルロス・クライバーと知り合いになっている。

現代音楽の指揮者という印象が当初は強かった。後にマーラーの一連の交響曲がリリースされた際にも、シェーンベルクやウェーベルン、ブーレーズ、クルタークといった作曲家の作品とセットにしている。

I had the honor to be part of Berkshire Choral International singing at the Newman center last night, at the University of Denver. Nice venue.

We sang Mozart, plus a couple of less well known pieces by under-represented composers. The Requiem in D Minor by José Maurício Nunes Garcia had tears in my eyes. Dixit Dominus by Marianna Martines was just exaltant.

I'd never listened to this symphony before yesterday.

What a treat this blend of the droll and the lyrical was! I particularly liked the use of the woodwinds.

I'm also sadly reminded of how rich Russian culture can be, and how deeply it has been perverted by autocracy and aggression.
