Musical interlude: Joseph Bologne, the Chevalier de Saint-George, is one of those zesty characters we need to read more about. The acknowledged, yet illegitimate, son of a Caribbean planter and an enslaved woman, he was sent to France to be educated, and became a noted fender, athlete, musician, composer, and conductor. There's already been at least one film about him, and he should be taught about in schools. Often referred to as "the Black Mozart," his compositions encapsulate the Baroque period.

"Sonata for Harpsichord & Violin, No. 3," composed by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-George, performed by Bridgette Haudebourg and Jean-Jacques Kantorow.

Today is such a gorgeous day that I am working from the front porch while listening to various opera overtures by Luigi Cherubini, one of the most overlooked composers of the Beethovenian era.

(I would nominate Louis Spohr as another forgotten Beethoven contemporary who deserves a lot more listens.)

Classical music isn't dead, but who's listening, and how, is changing
              By Janine Marshman

As Australians vote for the greatest classical music of all time, we look at who is listening, how classical music is evolving, and how it fills the world around us.
