I had mentioned there were two missing pipes from the Dominion Chalmers organ a few days ago. I received a reply from Mara Brown Director Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre (CDCC) today.

This is the first time I've heard of Aaron Avshalomov, let alone the 1931 "Hutongs of Peking"; of course, this might reflect ignorance or at least parochialism on my own part rather than any obscurity of Avshalimov.

Oddly enough, I was reminded of another piece of orchestral topographic programme music composed only a few years before, Resphighi's "Pines of Rome".

I wonder how popular or well known this piece is amongst Chinese music lovers today.

The notes by DW in the description section provide helpful biographical information on Avshalimov.

As an impecunious teenager in the UK years ago, I was delighted to pick up this recording of the 5th Symphony of Shostakovitch for 50p at W. H. Smith.

I had already heard and been delighted by the 1st Symphony, so I spent my money on the strength of the composer's name alone.

It's a very different work, of course -- dramatic, bleak at times, but also lyrical and perhaps ironic too. I've never tired of it.

I've listened to some of the other symphonies since then (not the 2nd or 3rd) but come back to the 1st and the 5th as my favourites.

It might not be obvious from the garish album cover that this recording is in fact a reissue of....

Yesterday we tuned into the local #classicalmusic station during dinner as we often do. Fabulous: Brahms’s second piano concerto with Pollini & Abbado.

As I did the dishes, to round out the hour they broadcast a jaunty short piece in turn-of-the-19th-century style. Not slop, it definitely had something to it, but they didn’t identify it.

The station’s website said it was the finale of Friedrich Witt’s Symphony in A. But who was Witt? A guy who wrote that piece in 1790 when he was 20 and later had a nice career in Würzburg.

But what was that infectious melody? It’s the French revolutionary marching song “Ça ira”!

Godowsky is one of the few pianists capable of drawing out the finest nuances from Chopin’s delicate textures, and his Nocturnes are close to perfection. The audio quality is generally satisfactory, with some moments of great clarity. However, in some instances, the sound is unclear and some misfires can be heard.

Here is a collection of recordings by Leopold Godowsky on 78-rpm discs dating from the period 1916–1929. The transfers were carried out by a friend of mine, Anton Stepichev. All files contain only a single channel. Anton comments: ‘When you mix two channels together, whether in an equaliser or digitally, you end up with a noticeable loss of clarity, no matter how hard you try. I tried everything and opted for a single channel.’
