Sviatoslav Richter’s interpretation of Franz Schubert’s last piano sonata D 960 is spacious, meditative, and deeply introspective, drawing out the work’s emotional breadth and inner architecture. His slow, thoughtful pacing reveals quiet tension, longing, and profound depth. Even Glenn Gould — who usually disliked Schubert — said Richter’s performance put him in a “hypnotic trance” and showed him the beauty of this music.

The Lotus Flower by Hans Christian Andersen.

In the poem Andersen establishes a contrast between the Nordic and Southern ideal of womanhood . He does so by juxtaposing the flower of the oriental lotus — a poetic representative of the Danish water lily which in Andersen’s time could be seen in almost every village pond — with the blossom of the southern pomegranate, which since antiquity has symbolised sensuality and fertility.

今日はベルリオーズの誕生日。1803年生まれ。ラ・コート＝サンタンドレという、フランス南部の村が故郷。

翌年にナポレオンが帝位につくという時代。つまりベートーヴェンが「英雄」を書いていた頃にベルリオーズが生まれた、という位置付け。ただ、南部で生まれた分、きな臭い事態に陥っていたパリよりは多少落ち着いていたのか、ベルリオーズの生い立ちでフランス革命の影響はそこまで感じない。まぁ、ナポレオンが失脚してセント・ヘレナに島流しにされた時にはまだ少年期だし。

The sheer scale of this combination of one orchestra and two choirs was hard to catch in a photograph. (And it’s not even showing all of six musicians on the balconies.)

We were treated to the Northern Netherlands Orchestra rehearsing a part of Mahler’s 8th Symphony in preparation for a week of concerts. The rehearsal was part of a small music festival evening.

I guesstimate there were 300 musicians and vocalists on stage.

The decibels coming out of this band were closer to tinnitus levels than doctors would approve, but it was awe-inspiring.

Also funny seeing orchestra members in their casual outfits.

Music ruminations:

Today I looked again at one of my long-stalled lockdown projects: pulling together and completing my two-cello arrangements of all 44 of Bartók’s Duos for two violins.

I think they deserve some sort of publication, especially since I no longer do any sort of teaching so I can’t distribute them myself.

But I don’t have the energy or time to get them printed properly, nor any of the tools necessary to market and sell them.

Which is where the project stalled last time too.

I’ll post a sample or two later, I think.
