schmonz.com is a Fediverse instance that uses the ActivityPub protocol. In other words, users at this host can communicate with people that use software like Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, etc. all around the world.
This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.
This morning I got an email from a sender that identified itself as an AI agent.
So - plus for being upfront about it, but... please don't do this.
I get that a lot of people are really, really, really into AI tools. OK. I have my opinions on them, you have yours. I have major qualms about them, some people think they're the best thing ever.
OK. Fine. But when your use of these things spills over into the rest of the world, it's no longer a question of my opinion vs. your opinion, my decisions vs. your decisions.
At this point, things have moved from each person doing their own thing to inflicting your use of AI onto me without my consent.
Before this spirals out of control, which I can see happening *very* quickly, I'd like for us to agree on a piece of netiquette:
- it is rude in the extreme to set loose an AI agent to reach out to people who have not consented to interact with these things.
- it is rude to have an AI agent submit pull requests that human maintainers have to review.
- it is rude to have an AI agent autonomously interact with humans in any way when they have not consented to take part in whatever experiment you are running.
- it is unacceptable to have an AI agent autonomously interact with humans without identifying the person or organization behind the agent. If you're not willing to unmask and have a person reach out to you with their thoughts on this, then don't have an AI agent reach out to me.
Stuff like this really sours me on technology right now. If I didn't have a family and responsibilities, I'd be seriously considering how I could go live off the grid somewhere without having to interact with this stuff.
Again: I'm not demanding that other people not use AI/LLMs, etc. But when your use spills out into my having to have interactions with an agent's output, you need to reconsider. Your ability to spew things out into the universe puts an unwanted burden on other humans who have not consented to this.
My primary laptop is still on Fedora 42, so I need to take a bit and refresh it. I usually do a full backup and fresh install rather than upgrades.
Debating whether to go to #Fedora 44 once it hits beta, try #Arch or #CachyOS, or move to #Debian Trixie on this machine. I'd lean toward Debian right now, but I'd have to start compiling #niri on my own since it's not available in Debian Trixie, nor does the project supply Debian packages.
Thoughts?
| Fedora 44: | 11 |
| Debian Trixie: | 16 |
| Arch or CachyOS: | 10 |
| Another option I'll explain as a comment: | 4 |

Several reasons why Ubuntu Is not a standard Linux experience
You are:
- Outsourcing understanding to system defaults
- Learning Ubuntu-specific syntax not Linux concepts
- Embracing bloat with Snap packages
- Settling for corporate meddling

Update. The Danish government is moving away from #Microsoft products to #OpenSource alternatives.

I recently added several #SEO improvements and made some smaller changes to the design to make it more readable but also slightly more modern. I'm not sure if this isn't already too fancy again where it should focus on simplicity and alignment with traditional manpages.

So I have a Digi CM48 terminal server, it’s pretty cool and uses an embedded Linux. Unfortunately its embedded Linux is ancient.
What’s worse, though, is that Digi says it’s sufficiently out of support that they “can’t” give me a link to the source code they’re required to provide under the terms of the GPL.
HELLO! My #opensource #lisp game Kandria is now out on GOG with a 70% discount (highest ever!) to go along with it:
Been on LXQT on my computers (main, secondary and ancient) for about a month now and I'm pretty happy. I'm not missing much and it wasn't (apart from setting it up in the first place) not much of an effort to adapt.
I just updated the Ghostbsd boxes to 25.02-R14.3p8
Thanks to the Qogir theme for applications and icons and the marvelous wallpapers by @orbite lambda I felt right at home and thanks to the LXQT people, both the FreeBSD and GhostBSD team, the FreeBSD port maintainer for giving us the ability to chose.

Sony's introduction of the PS2 Linux Kit caught the attention of researchers at NCSA. They combined 70 PS2 consoles in 2003 to form a supercomputer, highlighting its ability to perform complex scientific calculations.
Now would be a great time for smaller hosting providers like Hetzner to offer managed services with Zulip, RocketChat, and IRC servers...
Wouldn't it be spiffy if we saw an explosion of open-source managed services to replace proprietary ones Discord, Slack, Instagram, etc.?
System administration isn't for everyone. It's a non-starter to expect everybody to manage their own open-source services. *Especially* when people are trying to disentangle themselves from multiple proprietary things at once.
Run your own blog and web site? Sure. File backup? OK. Chat server... and photo hosting ... music and video streaming... and everything else? That starts to add up and become overwhelming for most people pretty quickly.
There's an opportunity for lots of small businesses, jobs, improving open source, and setting people free of proprietary services all at once here. If we all take it. Self-hosting doesn't *have* to mean literally running services yourself, if there are reasonable alternatives. (e.g., Fastmail, Hetzner Storage Share.)

Er muss komplett Open Source sein. Jede*r muss ihn nutzen können und ein ihre*seine Bedürfnisse anpassen können.
Dafür muss er als Teil einer digitalen Infrastruktur gedacht sein, die öffentliches Eigentum ist.

I think there are likely a bunch of #opensource & #freesoftware projects started in the last ~5 years that are run by maintainers who would love a structured way to recruit and nurture new human contributors, and who haven't yet heard of Outreachy @outreachy
