After the Spanish Civil War and the victory in of fascism, [Catalan cellist Pablo] Casals refused to play in public. It was his peace protest. In 1950, the bicentenary of the death of Johann Sebastian Bach, musicians from all over the world declared that if Casals would not play in public at concerts, they would come to him, to his village, his home. Thus was born the Festival pf Prades, now known as Festival . It has drawn over the years the finest of the world's chamber musicians and audiences from everywhere.

Musical Interlude: Listening to some classical today, and this popped up, an old favorite. A musical illustration of two caravans traveling the Silk Road, each with their own musical motif, and as they meet and cross paths, their motifs combine. It's a great piece for music-appreciation classes, and a classic bit of musical orientalism.

(Note about the orientalism: I've seem some condemn orientalism as cultural appropriation, but in all honesty, Borodin and a lot of others always were open about their inspiration for their works, and didn't pretend they came up with it themselves...so as long as you credit your inspiration, that meets my standards for acceptability.)

"In the Steppes of Central Asia," composed by Alexander Borodin, performed by the Main Line Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Don Liuzzi.

The first movement of Bach’s Cantata Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (BWV 140) on the radio.

Makes my brain go slightly wobbly with excitement, everything going on in this movement.

I could write a long essay about all the excitement, but I’ll confine myself to the observation that the slow chorale melody in the sopranos has its time moving at a slower pace than the music around it, and that music is organised into several layers which themselves have different paces.

Not all performances evince this layering effect. If you (a treble singer) are strongly counting your long notes in groups of three beats *at the speed of the other layers*, you have lost this feeling of slowness, and I can hear it. You need to do it with a slow metabolic rate (or something) so it sounds like notes in a slow speed rather than long notes in a fast speed.

Go give it a listen. Here’s one at a good speed (better than some at the above thing).
