音楽を志す様になったのは15歳の旧制中学時代から。しかし翌年中学を卒業すると働きに出る様になる。

私は一度だけベーレンスの実演に接する機会があった。1991年のクリスマス、新日フィルの第195回定期演奏会、指揮は小澤征爾。＜ワーグナー・アーベント＞で「ヴェーゼンドンク歌曲集」と「神々の黄昏」のブリュンヒルデを歌ったが、生憎の風邪をおしての登場で、残念ながらとても上出来とは言えない声でやっと歌い切った。それでもクリスマスだからというので最後に「聖夜」を歌って舞台を締めた。
その律儀さが命に関わったのでなかったら良いのだが。
