Music in general hasn't been evolving very music for the last 30 (40?) years or so, except little pockets here and there barely making a dent despite still finding a fanbase. If anything, the larger music scene has been backtracking (4 social ill). The most progress I think I have seen has been in and - and, well, I just can't think of anything else right now. There is more , so I guess that counts. But the aesthetic is not always there.

I go out of my way to collect public domain music, and I find it both interesting and frustrating that Archibald Joyce manages to fall into the exact umbra between US public domain law and EU public domain law. He was at the height of his popularity in the 1910s (and his music is closely associated with the Titanic, as it was included in their on-board songbooks), which is many years before the US rolling year-cutoff currently in the 1930s; but he lived to quite an old age, so a man who was popular 115 years ago isn't public domain under EU death-plus-seventy-years!
