今日はガブリエル・ピエルネの誕生日。1863年、フランス、ロレーヌ地方のメス（Metz）という街に生まれる。

この街は中世にはドイツ領だったが、17世紀にフランス領になっている。街の名のスペルがドイツ風なのはその名残。ピエルネの父親はここの音楽院の教師であり、母親もピアニストという音楽一家だった。

1871年の普仏戦争の結果、アルザス・ロレーヌ地方がプロイセンに割譲されたため、一家はパリへ移住を余儀なくされている。

I saw Singapore Symphony Orchestra perform tonight. It was a truly extraordinary program of Singaporean orchestral music but what most captured me was the sign language interpretation. There was the usual interpreter for the spoken remarks between songs but there was also a second interpreter Lily Goh communicating the musical dynamics of fully instrumental pieces. I’ve seen plenty of sign language interpretation for songs with lyrics but this is the first time I’ve seen it for orchestral works. You can see some of her work on the livestream

ブリュッヘンの葬儀や墓については公式な情報は見当たらない。葬儀に際してブリュッヘンの妻が北海沿岸で散骨にする意思を表明したという記事を載せているブログがあるが、他に裏付けのある情報がない。

当初はリコーダー奏者として名を馳せたブリュッヘンだが、18世紀オーケストラを編成した頃からは指揮者としての活動の方がメインになった様だ。
