maps.app.goo.gl/TWV2i5qp96sy4h

Today in Jody thinks about music: Robert Schumann's Kinderszenen (Op.15) = Scenes of Childhood.

These 13 pieces are not technically demanding, and are short. And partly because of the title, they are sometimes mistaken as pieces *for* children.

They have child-like characteristics, but getting that across in performance is decidedly not easy, and definitely not for children. (One can only understand childlike-ness after one has grown up.)

I think they are Schumann at his subtle best, and they need musicianship of the highest order to shine. Each piece is a little jewel, and the series is carefully organised so there is a sensible structure. (I read that he wrote around 30 pieces and winnowed it down to a single group of 13.)

Here is Maria João Pires playing the set, beautifully well. I am a fan.

Awake early. R4x offers Soul Music on Bach’s Goldberg Variations. I muse on my experiences with it.

It was introduced to me as a teenager by friends, in the 1981 Glenn Gould recording. We marvelled at the virtuosity, the intensity of the performance, its extremes. And loved it.

The counterpoint captured more of my attention than other music did, and I became fascinated by this, and by how this large-scale piece was organised. I learned about the canons and the quodlibet, and marvelled again.

I moved on from listening only to GG, to other pianists and then harpsichordists. But I will ever have a soft spot for my first crush, GG1981.

I try to hold it all in my head at once, a multi-faceted jewel cut in more dimensions than I can see, and marvel at the brain that made it.

But also, I see it as cerebral at the expense of heartfelt. It fills its own universe but not my entire musical universe. I need more to live than the Goldbergs can feed me.

It is Arvo Pärt's My Heart's In the Highlands, setting of the Robert Burns poem for organ and countertenor.

I think (video is not clear) this is David James singing, with Irina Gavrilenko playing organ.
