#NetBSD pkgsrc note on scrapers.
Updated post to mark the release of NetBSD 11.0!
For my install I wanted to include disk encryption to protect personal data in case the device is lost or stolen. Its not enough to simply encrypt home directories. Passphrases and sensitive data can linger and be extracted from locations such as system logs and swap memory. There is a trade-off to be made between how much to encrypt, the convenience of operating the system, and the ability to boot.
boostedSetup a simple web server with bozohttpd on NetBSD https://lobste.rs/s/titphm #netbsd #web

NetBSD 11 is starting to show up on the NYC*BUG dmesgd service:
https://dmesgd.nycbug.org/dmesgd?do=index&fts=NetBSD
Launched in 2004, dmesgd aims to provide a user-submitted repository of searchable *BSD dmesgs. The dmesg(8) command displays the system message buffer's content, and during boot a copy is saved to /var/run/dmesg.boot. This buffer contains the operating system release, name and version, a list of devices identified, plus a whole host of other useful information. We hope others find this resource useful and further contribute to its growth. Contact us at [ admin at lists dot nycbug dot org ]. Note that this site is not a substitute for sending the dmesg directly to the respective project.
Submit your dmesg here:
https://dmesgd.nycbug.org/dmesgd?do=submit
And if a handy script is what you are looking for, this Perl script from AFresh1 has long been the go-to for many submitters:
boostedBought a copy of #NetBSD on sale, only $49! That's a pretty good deal for a complete operating system, don't you think?
On a Raspberry Pi 0W. Not even the 02W. 1 core. 512 MB. Outstanding work, can't wait to check it out and maybe run my own.

boostedSince I already had the https://httpd.rocks domain (focusing on #OpenBSD) I figured it made sense to take advantage of the subdomain:
(Still placeholder until the guide is complete 😉 )
Heya!!
At this moment, #OpenBSD is the easiest to get a fully-working system. FreeBSD has decent hardware compatibility, but both wifi and the GUI are a somewhat manual (although fairly trivial) affair, at least until they complete their desktop installer.
#NetBSD also gives you a usable (and actually pretty attractive) X11 system in "base," but the hardware support isn't quite as good, and it lacks #FullDiskEncryption, if that's important to you.
boostedSuccessfully installed NetBSD 11 on my RockPro64 4gb device. I restored from a NetBSD 10 backup and everything is running great.
I grabbed the rockpro64 image from https://armbsd.org and flashed to an eMMC.
I have a PCIe card attached with a 500gb SSD with ZFS. This makes the restore a lot easier from a ZFS dataset backup.
Next is upgrading a couple RPis.
boostedUnfortunately, for of my university mail, account I have to use Microsoft Outlook
(I know, I know! Luckily, I’ve set up a redirect, so I hardly ever have to use it).
Tonight I tried using Firefox on NetBSD, but “Something went wrong.”
When I changed the user agent and set it to "Firefox on Linux", everything works fine, no problems, nothing "was wrong"!
In short, I think “Microsoft loves open source" but not NetBSD 😆
One more reason to keep using it 😈
(Forgive the corny joke, I know MS doesn’t actually love open source at all 😆)

FFS (in kernel)
OpenBSD - v1+2, no journaling, no softdeps, OpenBSD does not recognized NetBSD's FFS
NetBSD - v1+2+2ea, has journaling and softdep, recognizes OpenBSD's FFS (but can mount only in ro mode)
Ext2/3/4 (in kernel)
OpenBSD - can create and mount ext2 in rw mode, ext3/4 mounted in ro mode (ext4 has to be 32bit)
NetBSD - same as above
FAT32 (in kernel)
OpenBSD - works flawlessly, file size limit: 4GB - 1B
NetBSD - ditto
ZFS (in kernel)
OpenBSD - no
NetBSD - yes, allows for root on ZFS if boot partition is FFS
NTFS (in kernel)
OpenBSD - mounts in ro mode, works well
NetBSD - theoretically allows for ro mounting, but I was not able to achieve that :(
See ntfs-3g for rw mounting
Honorable mention - exFA(r)T (as FUSE) - can be recognized as NTFS, use mount.exfat, slow
Wanna transfer data from OpenBSD to NetBSD? Mount FFS in ro mode and siphon data off.
Wanna transfer data from NetBSD to OpenBSD? newfs_msdos is the answer or use exFAT/NTFS+ntfs-3g if you are patient.
Minor tip for those using FAT32 - command split(1) allows to cut tar archives into smaller parts which can be placed onto FAT partition. To merge them, use cat(1).
You probably know all that stuff.
