Spent the morning installing 11.0 over all the release candidates. In little while I'll upgrade the big one running 10.1 and ZFS. Congrats to all involved for a very nice release!

🚀 It goes to 11! The NetBSD Project is incredibly proud to announce the official release of NetBSD 11.0!

This release brings massive performance improvements, modernized hardware support, and the rock-solid stability you expect. Whether you are deploying on the latest ARM64 servers or keeping a classic toaster alive, NetBSD got you covered.

A huge thank you to developers, testers, and community for making this happen. 🧡

This works perfectly on my .config!

      bindsym XF86AudioRaiseVolume exec --no-startup-id mixerctl -w outputs.master++
      bindsym XF86AudioLowerVolume exec --no-startup-id mixerctl -w outputs.master--
      bindsym XF86AudioMute exec --no-startup-id mixerctl -w outputs.master=0

In case it's helpful to anyone. The brightness setting works right out of the box.
Now I'm trying to figure out why i3bar doesn't like my iwn0.

I've been trying to explore the world outside GNU/Linux (or, as I've recently taken to calling it, "Sexual predator userspace plus egotistical botlicker kernel"). Naturally, the first stop on this road is the fragmented world of .

I won't lie, the experience is very reminiscent of running Linux in the 1990s: hardware support is dicey at best, it's very rare to find commercial software that will run on it, and the guiding philosophy seems to be that user-friendliness is an undesirable quality that will only result in The Wrong People using your software. Nevertheless, I'm committed to giving it a fair trial.

So far my favorite variant is , especially for servers. I like the fact that it's secure by default, rather than being a hacker's dream out of the box that you then have to figure out how to secure. But I have questions.

                      - One of the features I've heard touted a lot is "jails," which I gather means "like Docker but harder to use". But this doesn't seem to be a feature in OpenBSD. Is there something equivalent in the OpenBSD world, perhaps under another name?

                      - The only *BSD that I know for sure has banned LLM contributions is . What, if any, are the LLM policies of OpenBSD and FreeBSD?

                      - Has anybody tried audio production in BSD? What's the experience like? It took years for Linux to get to the point where you could more or less do serious audio work, and I hate to think of regressing back to "if you buy this one particular sound card they stopped making in 1998 and recompile the kernel with a dodgy patch someone posted to USENET you can maybe kind of play a .WAV file".

Thanks in advance for your help!

(I have been informed by an anonymous source that "BSD jails" are in fact what they put you in if you use the software without a valid BSD license. I am not sure this is correct.)

Not as damning as one might think.

That's a commit to external/ where Christos Zoulas is importing into NetBSD's mirror all of the changes made to the original ISC BIND in version 9.20.24, en bloc. M. Zoulas didn't use the LLM, and the LLM-generated code is only one of a whole slew of changes made to the BIND source tree in that version.

The person who uses the LLMs is Michal Nowak who works for ISC in QA.

                                          gitlab.isc.org/isc-projects/bi

has an explicitly pro-LLM stance on , and I wouldn't be surprised if and DHCP follow suit.

                                          gitlab.isc.org/isc-projects/bi

                                          gitlab.isc.org/isc-projects/bi

There have been good reasons not to use ISC BIND for over a quarter of a century (monolithic software, runs with superuser privileges, multiple hats, lots of parsing). Alas, it is an expenditure of time and effort on the people's parts to switch to a non-LLM-generated DNS server software. But it is well past due.

@Unsightly3055 Plenty of YouTube vids of conference talks across various subjects that BSD gets used for. There is the BSDNow podcast and FreeBSD Journal that has lots of stuff packed into each issue.

What you do mostly in Linux can be done in the BSDs, typically a lot easier and better visibility at what is going on.

There's not a lot of options, sadly.

I'm experimenting with #NetBSD, as they have a strong anti-slop stance, but the second you start installing packages, you're getting slop. They can't police everything.

In fairness, Debian/kFreeBSD was an on-going project for well over a decade, and there was even a Debian/kNetBSD several years before that. That said, their histories show that talk is cheap for the people suggesting Debian on a BSD kernel yet again.

If you encounter them, throw the cat amongst the pigeons by telling them that not only is Debian/Hurd an active project, unlike the dead Debian on BSD ones, it's also not a Linux kernel; and Samuel Thibault could do with the assistance. (-:

                                                      I don't know what M. Thibault's position on LLM-generated code is.

Installed Dillo ( @dillo ) and NetSurf on that little machine.

Both are really fast, NetSurf seems a bit more complete. But I have a soft spot in my heart for Dillo, as I used it for years with Sylpheed to read emails that were HTML only.
