Updated post to mark the release of NetBSD 11.0!

For my install I wanted to include disk encryption to protect personal data in case the device is lost or stolen. Its not enough to simply encrypt home directories. Passphrases and sensitive data can linger and be extracted from locations such as system logs and swap memory. There is a trade-off to be made between how much to encrypt, the convenience of operating the system, and the ability to boot.

11.0 was released couple days ago. Didn't see that until today.
                              some release highlights:
                              * New port to the RISC-V processor architecture
                              * New MICROVM kernel for x86 designed for extremely fast (about 10 ms on 2020-era x86 CPUs) virtual machine boot
                              * improved support for Nintendo Wii
                              * Enable fan control for PowerMac7,2 (mid 2003)
                              * New driver for QEMU virtual GPUs (viogpu)

                                      Heya!!

At this moment, #OpenBSD is the easiest to get a fully-working system. FreeBSD has decent hardware compatibility, but both wifi and the GUI are a somewhat manual (although fairly trivial) affair, at least until they complete their desktop installer.

#NetBSD also gives you a usable (and actually pretty attractive) X11 system in "base," but the hardware support isn't quite as good, and it lacks #FullDiskEncryption, if that's important to you.

Unfortunately, for of my university mail, account I have to use Microsoft Outlook

(I know, I know! Luckily, I’ve set up a redirect, so I hardly ever have to use it).

Tonight I tried using Firefox on NetBSD, but “Something went wrong.”

When I changed the user agent and set it to "Firefox on Linux", everything works fine, no problems, nothing "was wrong"!

In short, I think “Microsoft loves open source" but not NetBSD 😆

One more reason to keep using it 😈

(Forgive the corny joke, I know MS doesn’t actually love open source at all 😆)

My educated guess is that the wakeup code resets the current active KVT to the first one, and this is done in order to effect an explicit KVT switch that gets everything refreshed.

If someone actually looks at the innards of and finds out the real reason, it will be interesting to know how close my guess came. (-:
