@BoxyBSD@bsd.cafe Returns to : Migrating from to ()

Some journeys don't end where you expect them to. Sometimes they bring you right back to where everything began, only with a lot more experience and a much better ecosystem waiting for you.

That's exactly what is happening with BoxyBSD!

In my (longer) blog post I cover my circuit, where I moved from bhyve to Proxmox, developed many tools for Proxmox and now moved back to FreeBSD with bhyve and Sylve.

More details in my blog post: https://gyptazy.com/blog/boxybsd-moving-from-proxmox-to-bhyve-with-sylve/

@brubarwal @ParadeGrotesque Yeh it's a common issue, especially when you add CDNs into the mix. The only way for pkgin to work reliably is if entire package directories are only ever updated atomically. I do this for pkgsrc.smartos.org/ so you'll never see similar errors there, but I don't know that everyone else is so careful. If you just run naive rsync then files and pkg_summary will be out of sync until the entire directory has finished uploading.

The sad thing is, as I was saying last year, all of this is unnecessary. The kernels, , , , and , all maintain almost all of the stuff that 'who' needs, and have done since the switch to POSIX sessions and process groups in the 1980s.

There aren't any needs for a parallel database outwith the kernel. A few sysctl/procfs extensions for reading the kernel's own list of sessions, and we'd be away.

I have a lot of issues downloading stuff with 'pkgin' which makes it difficult to install what I want... A lot of downloads end in: "package not found".

On the other hand, I think I'll only need to install emacs 30 to have a productive little machine.

            codeberg.org/aartaka/pages/com

It was fun, because POSIX Make is super restrictive! But the end result is that all the website now builds on Make, Make, and pdpmake <github.com/rmyorston/pdpmake>!

I think the time is right to follow Torvalds advice 😅 and finally "upgrade" my laptop to NetBSD.

I was trying to figure out whether to stick with stable or current, and also whether I should encrypt the entire disk or just /home and then the swap partition via rc.conf (if I understand correctly, that’s possible, right?).

Current is "solid" enough for daily use? Any advice? It's not the first time on NetBSD for me but I'm not an expert 😆

I wrote up that blurb in 2014, and it still does that today, although I did in 2015 make vcsa file generation a non-default option, as there's also a better full Unicode display file available.

Building on is an adventure: one first needs to edit Makefile and replace --quiet with -s (Busybox's sha256sum doesn't recognize the former option), then edit mkimg.sh and remove --show from losetup options (again, a Busybox quirk). Even then, the build is only mostly successful, and my attempt of running a full live setup... makes me think I should have RTFM for first.

On the BSDs you'll get either the (BSD rather than Debian flavour) Almquist or the Korn shells out of the box in the operating systems themselves.

The Z, Bourne Again, and Watanabe shells come as installable applications.

It's definitely worth learning the Almquist and Korn shells for scripting purposes, not least because they are what you'll get with 'sh' as the script interpreter; but also because the Almquist shell is lighter weight than the Bourne Again shell. As Debian people learned years go when they switched 'sh' to (their flavour of) the Almquist shell, it's worth the initial learning effort in order to not use the shells with many heavyweight interactive features when one is running shell scripts.

On 10 March 2021, I had only just fallen asleep when my phone started buzzing. Then another notification, and another. In a matter of minutes, 142 of my servers went up in the clouds. And not the cloud-computing kind.

Most of them were physically going up in a column of smoke in Strasbourg.

My wife looked at me and asked if I wanted a coffee. I nodded. It was going to be a very long day.

At EuroBSDCon 2026, I won't be giving a theoretical lecture on high availability. Instead, I’m going to tell the raw story of that night: the emergency recovery, the architectural choices that actually saved us, and the ones that crumbled under pressure (because we rarely talk about what fails).

Most of all, I’ll explain why that night changed my perspective, and why I’ve come to see BSD systems not just as operating systems, but as essential, practical tools for building simpler, more resilient infrastructure.

The official schedule is now live. If you want to hear a real-world post-mortem, join me on Saturday, 12 Sept at 11:15 (Room D.0.02).
