schmonz.com is a Fediverse instance that uses the ActivityPub protocol. In other words, users at this host can communicate with people that use software like Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, etc. all around the world.
This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.
If I were to give a prize for the most disruptive workflow change of my life, it will be probably `less` changing home/end key behavior from scrolling to top/bottom (something which I do *all the time*) to disabling line wrapping and scrolling left/right (something I never do).
It's like XKCD#1172, except it's "we've decided spacebar heating is so cool, we've removed all other spacebar functions".

Remotely unlocking an encrypted hard disk
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to sneak into the earliest parts of the boot process, swap the startup config without breaking anything, and leave without a trace.
Are you ready? Let's begin.

I use #Vivaldi browser on #Linux. Apart from printing, it's good! #noAI
"Independent research shows users are less likely to click through to original sources when an AI summary is present, i.e. fewer visits for publishers, creators, & communities that keep the web vibrant. A recent PewResearch study found users clicked traditional results roughly half as often when AI summaries appeared. Publishers warn of dramatic traffic losses when AI overviews sit above links."

Life is Strange: Before the Storm has a native Linux version, but it won't start on modern distros like Fedora 43. The game links against internal glibc symbols that were removed in glibc 2.34.
The fix: a tiny shim library (~10 lines of C) that wraps the missing functions and injects them via LD_PRELOAD. Played through tentire game this way without issues.
I hate it when developers say they don't/won't support Linux because "they open too many bugs".
What the fuck are you smoking.
They bring in the issues because they're used to bugs being fixed and things getting better with feedback and overall understand how to write bug reports to be useful.
Windows users just cope and hope their computer doesn't eat their files next update.
If nothing else, you WANT it on Linux to get those bug reports. Because for every Linux exclusive bug, you'll have 10 that also effect Windows, but the Windows people ignore because they've been taught that there's nothing they can do.

Sometimes my Framework touchpad stops working after suspend/resume. I finally found this fix:

Thanks Internet! (I suspected that some module could be unloaded/loaded to fix but I didn't know which). #Linux
So, why *should* GNOME support server side decorations? https://lobste.rs/s/zjje5x #linux

Is anyone else completely exhausted by the "Suggested For You" era of the web?
I feel like 2025 broke something in my tolerance for algorithmic feeds. I caught myself scrolling my personal insta yesterday and realized I hadn't seen a post from an actual human friend in ten minutes. It was just engagement bait and AI-generated slop. Uggh!
Thinking about moving my web reading habits to RSS.

If you develop for #linux please make offline installation possible, for people in countries with restricted internet. Came back home last night and today I want to install Luminance HDR but their only option for linux is via the terminal, and yet, while I can access full internet on my phone using a VPN, I can't access any on my laptop/workstations, so I can't install this program, unless I use Wine. I'm in #Uganda They cut off internet during elections and it has now been partially restored.
Alternatives to #Linux are Redox, the BSDs, Illumos, Haiku, ReactOS, and Plan 9. There are even more! 🙂
