I'm one of those folks that's looking into NetBSD "for reasons" and I'm finding new joy in computing. I don't have it running on my laptop or desktop yet, not for lack of trying, but I have been learning a lot and having a lot fun in this journey. I am going to donate because not only is the project deserving of our support, but learning more about NetBSD, and BSDs in general, has sparked new excitement in computing for me. I've been a Linux user for more than 30 years and AI has pretty much ruined most of what made me fall in love with Linux and many Open Source projects.

@paculino @eickot @nina_kali_nina I have been concerned for some time about the dependencies that systemd has brought with it.

LIke ivy entwining itself round and through the LInux distros I am familiar with.

It does make me wish to persevere with #NetBSD.

Persevere in a way that does not involve me recreating the #XFCE desktop environment that I have been using for years under LInux.

Rather just work with the OOB experience that vanilla NetBSD offers without using more modern desktops.

So, yeah. Another #EuroBSDCon is behind us, and we're sad to leave. It has been incredible meeting all the old farts and new hopefuls - more of the latter than ever, I think! Great talks in all tracks - including the hallway one. Even some conspiracies for good, which is always fun.

There were too many highlights to mention, so I'll just shout a big THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to making this a fantastic experience - again.

On a personal note I ask/hope those of you who said hi at the conf can reach out and remind me who you are, so I can connect faces to handles on here. I suck at remembering so you'll have to forgive me for some of the bewildered looks I'm sure I gave some of you.

(After that last pic I was afraid someone would arrest us - drinking that beer from paper cups must be an affront to the locals..)

All our gear packed up: An empty 5l beer can on a table, along with some clothes. A large carrying bag with two LCD screens, the Toshiba luggable computer, and a plastic shopping basket with the rest of the parts and gear.

Both nettle and and mbedtls3 are packaged in #pkgsrc. So it looks like the only things missing are pihole-FTL, which is probably fairly straightforward to package, and a version of that vast install shell script that doesn't have all of the wacky creating secret packages nonsense in it and just does the configuration parts. (pkgsrc itself can handle creating and depending from a pihole-meta package.)

I would surmise that writing an OS from scratch is considerably more difficult today than in the 90s because the hardware is so much more complex and bespoke.

But just FYI, #NetBSD is a Unix-like OS with a hard anti-LLM stance, and it's not the only one, although it probably is the most complete, when comparing it to Linux.

Audio "just worked". Run `audiocfg test 0` and I have sound through the laptop speakers. Plug in headphones and it properly mutes speakers; upon removal system un-mutes.

Note that page seems to be dated around 2008 / NetBSD 1.5, and the kernel is bigger now than then.

Scratch that, it was actually #NetBSD 11, released earlier this year, on a 45 year old Sun2 machine. The sun2 is still officially supported. Amazing.

Ok nerdfriends, I have a #netbsd question:

I've been interested in the os since it took a strong anti-ai position.

I got it installed after some faffing about, and noticed that tmux is installed in base.

Now tmux is wonderful, but there has also been some controversy about it having some ai-generated commits.

How are both of these things true? Is it an older version? Have the offending commits been patched out? A secret third thing?

Looking to learn here, not pick a fight.

Anyone happens to know how to configure the screen resolution in the #NetBSD installer (NetBSD-11.0-amd64-install.img)?

I want to install it on my netbook (Intel GMA 3150, 1024x600) and early boot is fine, but at some point during boot, the screen resolution changes to a too large font. And then the installer can’t continue.

I’ll do a proper debugging session eventually, but just in case someone knows of a quick fix for this … let me know. ✌️
