Whew.

Finally! masto.nyc is now fully and completely decoupled from the local code dependencies on my computer. It is fully autonomous between github and digital ocean.

https://github.com/Five-Borough-Fedi-Project/masto.nyc-docean/pull/150 was the first true version upgrade that only required one click to complete. It feels good to achieve this level of automation AND completely turn all of the assets over to something owned by the non profit, 5bfp.org

ansible-jailexec 2.0.3 is out: a security release for the Ansible connection plugin that runs tasks inside FreeBSD jails via jexec.

Files pushed into a jail were staged in /tmp on the jail host with the source file's mode (often 0644), so other local users on the host could read them during the transfer. Staging now uses a private 0700 directory.

I'm giving Nomad a serious evaluation for work and I have two big concerns about it. I'd love to hear from folks who are either using Nomad or else have used Nomad and switched over to k8s/k3s/similar.

What I really like about Nomad is that I can wrap my head around it. Kubernetes is complex on both a conceptual and an expressive level. That is to say I find it challenging to think about all the pieces that go into a Kubernetes service deployment. It's pods and jobs and service discovery and networking, ingress, egress, etc.

Nomad is just orchestration and optional service discovery. Other programs can then do their thing on top, and you can choose the programs you want to use.

But...

Nomad is far less supported than Kubernetes. For every Nomad deployment I imagine there are 100 or 1000 or more Kubernetes deployments. While that's not critical to me, it does make "learn by example" harder.

That lack of community also connects in my mind around the license situation.

When Terraform became BUSL, there was a fork called OpenTofu announced shortly thereafter. Similarly, Vault was forked into OpenBao.

And yet in the two years since Nomad and Consul were moved to BUSL, neither seems forked.

I suspect that's because service providers were supporting Kubernetes deploys rather than Nomad or Docker Swarm, and so no one company decided to take on maintaining a fork.

The license situation is complicated because BUSL will not impact me in any serious way. I won't be selling Nomad services and so the license restrictions are more philosophical than practical. Secondarily, the license does revert to Free Software over time. In 2027 we should see the 2024 release.

While BSUL is not Free/Open Source, its lack of deep restrictions and short span make it more like FLOSS than, eg Source Available.

I think that the license and small community size go hand in hand, and this lack of community makes me anxious that if IBM decides the project is not worth maintaining, it will simply disappear rather than being maintained by the community- with my evidence being that we never saw the community fork as we did with OpenTofu and OpenBao.

I'm simplifying the situation with OpenTofu and OpenBao though, because as I understand it both are effectively maintained by service providers, similar to how Valkey is maintained by companies who don't want to use Redis.

Aside from these issues, are there reasons I should not use Nomad?

We keep retreating too swiftly from our meaningful names for collections of lessons learned. When we relinquish our words and their meaning, we lose much of the wisdom that goes with it. We've done it with #Agile. We did it again with #DevOps. The loss is costing us all.

Organisational Dysfunction of the Day

DORA, the wrong way round

Context: The DORA metrics have become the gold standard for measuring engineering performance. Deployment frequency, lead time for changes, change failure rate, and time to restore service. The four key metrics. Teams build dashboards around them, set quarterly targets, and run improvement initiatives to move the numbers in the right direction. Some teams genuinely improve, while others find the numbers are stubborn or that improvements one quarter quietly reverse the next. Leadership concludes that the teams need more discipline, better tooling, or another round of training. What gets called cargo culting (for lack of a better term) in the industry, copying the visible practices without the underlying conditions, is exactly this pattern.

OST explains: DORA was designed as a research instrument, not as a target system. The metrics are downstream signals of healthy delivery, not the drivers of it. Healthy delivery is when self-managing teams own the whole product, make decisions without escalation, and have tight feedback loops with the people they serve. Take those structural conditions away, and the numbers regress, no matter how many dashboards you build. Treating DORA as a goal in DP1 (bureaucratic) is exactly the goal displacement Goodhart warned about: the moment a measure becomes a target, it stops being a good measure. In DP2, the self-managing-group structure, the same numbers emerge naturally as side effects of work well done. You do not need to chase them. You need to build the conditions that produce them.
