A few months back, we posted about the new Fediverse instance called “the Forkiverse“. This is a Mastodon instance started by the hosts of the Search Engine podcast and the Hard Fork podcast. The site has picked up tens of thousands of users, with a distinctive local culture, and is a nice part of the Fediverse.

The hosts are planning to shut down the server on Dec 31, 2026. They go over the reasons in an episode of the Search Engine podcast, Vladimir Putin’s Forkiverse. The reasons are pretty understandable — the cost of the hosting and the effort needed to moderate and manage the Forkiverse instance isn’t offset by their own enjoyment of the platform or a sense of mission.

I (Evan) am interviewed as part of this episode. It was a tough interview to do — I never want to talk about servers shutting down. But it’s part of the work that we are concentrating on here at the Social Web Foundation — in particular, the study of Fediverse server sustainability that is partly funded by our grant from the Interledger Foundation. Understanding what it means when instances shut down is important.

The interview was one of several that I’ve done with the Search Engine folks. We talked for several hours back in 2024, when my ActivityPub book had just come out, and when the SWF was just starting. We had follow up interviews in the intervening years. It’s been a good relationship, actually.

Search Engine has a new episode that includes excerpts from those interviews on its premium feed today. The episode is available on a few platforms — I found it on Spotify at Thirty-three minutes of hopefulness for a better internet . I was worried that it was going to be kind of saccharine — here’s this idealist, fighting for hopeless cause — but I think it actually is a pretty good listen. I got to be human, instead of a caricature, which was nice.

It’s been nice to stay connected to the Search Engine team, including PJ Vogt, during this time. I’m glad that he and the other people involved in the Forkiverse are giving the site a long enough time to wind down that the users there can move to other instances. And I’m glad that they’re going to stay connected to the Fediverse from their accounts on Threads, Bluesky, or elsewhere.

I remain hopeful for the Fediverse, and I hope you are, too. We’re doing something important together.

The Miku Real Japanese Podcast themikurealjapanesepodcast.buz

Interviews or essays in natural conversational Japanese, usually 20-40 mins long. I found this difficult, usually because I had a hard time following the thread of conversation or recognizing enough vocab, so probably N2+ or high N3. Topics were hit or miss for me. Maybe I'll come back to it later once I'm better at Japanese.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have William Shatner explain to you in Esperanto that you should wait to have sex until marriage?

No, I didn't just have a weird dream after gorging on pizza before bed last night...apparently...because @brooke and I recorded a whole podcast about a movie that is apparently exactly that. Come join us to learn about "Incubus," a movie filmed by a mad man who lied to the Catholic Church, and the State of California to convince them to let him yell at Shatner in Esperanto for ten days...and somehow produced kirkland Seventh Seal.

Let's learn Japanese from small talk smalltalkinjapanese.hatenablog

I tried a couple episodes of this and it didn't vibe with me at all. I found the hosts hard to understand and the topics didn't grab me. They occasionally used English which I found jarring since it was often words I knew in Japanese, but words I didn't know were left untranslated. Maybe I'd like it better if I was focusing on understanding more casual pronunciation, but for now not a good fit.

日本語 with あこ - Nihongo Picnic Podcast nihongopicnic.notion.site/Niho

Another recent rec I'm really enjoying. 5 mins on daily life and Japanese culture. The episodes feel scripted and are read quite clearly and (depending on level) slowly, though with good energy. Good mix of N4, N3 and more advanced episodes. They make a great warm up before a more natural podcast, or a chance to focus on understanding everything, since I should know all the vocab & grammar used.

A more recent addition, but I'm really enjoying this one! Two hosts chat about 2-3 topics around the same theme for 20-30 mins (though it looks like older episodes are shorter). All conversational Japanese, fairly simple but with a natural back and forth. I like the dynamic between the hosts and their choice of topics. Episodes are tagged with difficulty: often N3 or N2, sometimes N4, occasionally easier or harder.

I've been listening to this one for several years because I like it. Noriko talks about life, books, movies, trips, culture, occasionally philosophy. All Japanese, conversational and simple but not overly enunciated. Early episodes are shorter (5-10 mins) and easier, later are longer (30-60 mins) and harder. Interview episodes are weakest point, often with poor/uneven sound quality.

                            Confession time.

Years ago I rolled Scrum out with my team strictly by the Guide. Sprints, points, standups, all of it. Truth is, I hadn't understood the first thing about agile. Pure cargo cult, and I couldn't even see it at the time.
