I'm a software engineer with 35 years of experience. I've worked across an unusually wide range of domains: mobile game backends, privacy-preserving data platforms, high-throughput COVID testing infrastructure, email and account systems, e-payment processing, job marketplace systems, and bioinformatics. I pick up new domains quickly and have a history of doing it repeatedly. I understand how to turn business needs into engineering requirements.

I prefer to work remotely but I am open to an in-office job in the Philadelphia area or especially in Philadelphia itself. I've often worked remotely since the 1990s and can operate with minimal supervision. Several of my favorite projects were self-directed: I identified the need, built the thing, and shipped it. My preferred time zone is America/New_York, but I'm flexible.

Some of the many, many technologies I've used are: Python, Perl, TypeScript/JavaScript, Haskell, Go, C, Java. Postgres, MySQL, SQLite. Flask, SQLAlchemy. AWS (Lambda, S3, RDS, SQS, EC2). Docker, Git. Github and Gitlab.

I've also repeatedly picked up new languages and stacks as needed: Haskell for differential privacy research, TypeScript for a 24/7 AWS Lambda system, Flask for my most recent employer. I've become productive with new systems over and over, and I can do it quickly.

I'm a published author (Higher-Order Perl, Morgan Kaufmann), longtime blogger, and conference speaker with a reputation for making complex ideas clear.

Today in looking around CATMAID software source code I found an example, from 9 years ago, of myself using a thin abstraction layer over the generation of UI elements in javascript. Concise and to the point, explicit and clear still to me all these years later.

Try that, 9 years from now, with any LLM-generated code. If your answer is that you won't need to, I feel sorry for your loss. There is pleasure in the art of software engineering and in reading nice code [1], and more mundanely, in building things and working out a challenge by yourself.

That BBC article is irksome. Everything happens 'within a millisecond' on modern computers. That's a truly terrible dumbing down done by, the byline says, some business reporters.

Reading the report, it seems that the system alerted about some failures, and back-up procedures that had been practiced and been in training courses went into effect to provide a degraded but still operational and safe system.

That's a classic tale of aerospace safety and system redundancy.

Although I have to wonder at (a) how a processing error in data gets to become a link timeout rather than an error transaction response, and (b) how this sounds suspiciously like an autoincrementing counter not having a lock around it.

Nonetheless, the systems engineering was clearly done, and responses planned and practiced.

And some twerp politician with a humanities degree calls it 'completely unacceptable'.

Signals we used: Well-written prose, thorough documentation, tidy repositories, passing CI, lots of tests, good overall presentation.

Producing them implied: time, attention, familiarity with the work, dedication to a quality product.

What has changed: Generative tools can produce the outward signals cheaply, which means the information content drops for everyone.

Squeak now includes #ephemerons, which support efficient pre-mortem finalization of objects. Ephemerons are powered through a new mourner queue that the #OpenSmalltalkVM maintains during garbage collection.

By using an EphemeronIdentityDictionary instead of a weak dictionary, weak indirect cyclic dependencies (e.g., in reciprocal observers) can now be properly GC'ed.
