Mind Palace ... I'm one hour into drawing / tracing to make the outline. This will be my road map for when I transfer the design to a wood panel. I'm not done drawing the outline but my eyes can only handle an hour at a go.

With the time it took to find the images and create the collage, I'm already 5 hours into this project.

Just the background coloured in flat geometric areas: red for the ceiling, red, salmon and tan for the curtains. Light blue for the sky. Tan for the floor, outside ceiling. Salmon again for the fish floor. An orange for the bed area save for an area of yellow for the lamp. The seated figure is still white with black outlines.

Now the figure is coloured in too. Her suit is a similar red to the ceiling. Her body is lighter yellow to the lamp area. The seat is a neutral colour, save for the reddish areas for the wood.

I'm loosely adding details to this digital mock-up. I probably won't start actually painting this piece until January.

I've started on my next 2x2 foot painting. This began as a digital collage of some vintage photographs I own. Now I'm attempting to paint it.

I started by playing down pages of carbon paper and gluing my enlarged outline over it. Then tracing with an orange pen so I could see my work.

Now I am slowly darkening the outline with burnt umber paint before I paint my base colour glaze.

Here we are at 8 hours of work on "Niagara Falls Wedding." That translates to about 30 minutes of mixing paint pots of colours I'll be using on this piece and 30 minutes of painting.

The rest of the day spent on watercolours, business stuff, and working with a client.

Now it's a rather abstract piece showing the horseshoe falls (more realistically rendered than the foreground) with four loosely painted figures in dresses, hats and veils. The middle figure is the bride being fitted with her garter.

Twelve hours of work now. It was one of those days where I had to scrape off my work and move things around. The hat and veil on the far right maid was just WRONG. That's the fun of putting a chicken head where a human head was.

Worked an hour this morning while the light was good. Can't work any more on it today as we're having a planned power outage to upgrade the hydro service (which isn't hydro where I am... it's actually solar and wind mostly). But the point is, my house abuts a hill on the southern side, so natural light is fleeting.

Performance instructions Solo voice parts should be sung by members of the choir. They do not have to be consistently assigned, and may be distributed to as many or as few singers as the performers choose: each solo phrase or passage may be sung by anyone with a suitable voice for it. Accidentals apply throughout the measure, but may be repeated for clarity. Confirmatory natural signs are often shown in the score which do not appear in individual parts where there is no potential ambiguity. Unless otherwise specified, single lines after divisi are unison tutti. On any tones sustained too long for a single bow stroke, strings should bow freely, not in unison. Orchestral dynamics are marked cautiously throughout. If balance with the choir can be maintained, the orchestra may use a wider dynamic range while preserving the indicated contours. Regarding spoken text in the Apostles’ Creed: The core sound from which the music gradually emerges should be that of an ordinary group of people praying together aloud. Each choir member should speak the text with their normal voice, accent and pronunciation. When speaking, do not be concerned about precise rhythmic unison, and do not enunciate or project in a theatrical manner—just say the words together. Spoken text is aligned with rests or notes in the staff to show where key syllables should fall with respect to the conductor’s beat, in order to pace the spoken parts in coordination with the sung parts and the orchestra. But do not chant in metrical rhythm or give special emphasis to downbeats. The priority is to speak the phrases in a natural way, even if you get a little ahead or behind. As the creed continues, speakers begin singing little by little until all are singing by the final words, “and life everlasting, Amen.” In the previous line (“…the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body…”), it may be necessary to pause between spoken clauses to stay on pace with the singing parts. Program note I like the spiritual idea of mystery—of something too profound to comprehend intellectually, which cannot be explained or grasped, only encountered and experienced. Music can be mysterious in that way. This 20-minute composition for choir and orchestra is the first in a series of works setting the complete prayers of the rosary. I carried the idea for this project in the back of my mind for at least 20 years before beginning to compose it. When the pandemic first hit, I found myself managing a confluence of serious health issues affecting my community and those close to me. In the clarity of that strange time, having narrowed our horizons to focus on simple survival at home, and with COVID raging through the world outside, something finally clicked, and in March 2020 I got started on The Luminous Mysteries. Today, the pandemic continues, but so do we. This piece is offered in gratitude for answered prayers. The rosary is a traditional scripture-based form of meditation, comprising many repetitions of simple prayers, typically counted using beads on a string. The prayers and beads are grouped into five "decades," each centered on ten repetitions of the Hail Mary. The constant gentle recitation of the same words is intended to induce a contemplative state, freeing the mind to engage with spiritual mysteries: each decade focuses on a specific biblical theme, idea or event with mysterious resonance. These are traditionally grouped as the Joyous, the Sorrowful, and the Glorious Mysteries. In 2002—the same year I married the love of my life, whose name means "Light"—Pope St. John Paul II proposed a fourth set: The Luminous Mysteries. This piece sings the introductory prayers and the first decade of The Luminous Mysteries. To evoke the mental state of divided attention that praying the rosary calls for, while the choir sings the cycles of repeating prayers, solo voices, representing our distracted, wandering, half-controlled attempts to contemplate the given mystery, arise from within the choir to sing words drawn from gospel passages related to The Baptism of Christ. Music for the four remaining Luminous Mysteries, of The Wedding at Cana, The Proclamation of the Kingdom, The Transfiguration, and The Eucharist, is yet to be composed. When complete, these will be performable either as self-contained compositions, or together with this as a set constituting a full-concert work. I think of music as a form of prayer, and I love how it can touch each listener differently, becoming meaningful by resonating uniquely with their own thoughts, ideas, and emotions. I invite you into this experience, and I hope it will—mysteriously—come alive for you.

Here is how my surreal pieces start. I put together a digital collage from my large vast photo collection. This piece has five photos. One my husband took, three I took, and one vintage portrait I purchased.

Next I'll draw my version of it in Procreate to test out the layout and sort out a color scheme. If I like it, I'll then do a larger painting in acrylics.

For today's #inkyDays drawing, I'm playing with yesterday's Ammonite inspired pattern but taking it in a more floral direction.
