Mrs Daniels - 21 hours of work (14 hours of painting). Shadow problem addressed (but needs cleaning up). Initial work on the shirt pattern done.

Mrs Daniels is now sporting a blue floral print blouse. The colours are pretty flat right now as I was focused more on the pattern and less on highlights, shadows, and folds. This photo was taken under the bright white light I use to paint by.

Same amount of work but photographed under natural light. Now the blues of the shirt are less shiny and less eye popping.

Mrs. Daniels - 22 hours of work (15 hours of painting). The background ... the stuff out the window is done. I've painted the pearlescent green glaze over it. Now to focus on Mrs. Daniels and the TV tray.

This one was photographed with the white light still on. The glaze was still wet so the window area looks washed out. You'll notice the blue sky is now a little green. That's intentional to mimic the color shift that comes from looking through tinted glass.

This time I photographed with natural light, so sunlight coming in from the window behind me. Before I glazed the background I adjusted the outlines of the birds in the sky to make the blue a little less obvious.

Mrs Daniels - 23 hours of work (16 hours of painting)

I am at the stage where the work isn't obvious. I glazed another layer of blue onto the skirt and then blended in another layer of shadows in the folds of the skirt. I did similar with her arms and hands. I need to do that to her blouse but I am awaiting a new tube of paint.

Mrs. Daniels with better defined hands and arms and folds to her skirt. Photographed under a white light.

Mrs. Daniels - 24 hours - a complete day! of work. But spread out over two months of work. If I had been traveling so much it would be more like a month of work.

Today I painted Mrs. Daniel's face and another layer of glazing on her floral blouse. I have now officially reached the all details phase. Shot under the white light I use to paint by makes all the colours very saturated.

I worked on Mrs. Daniels again. All of the red primer is now covered. The undertone for her head is now down.

View of the painting on the H frame easel. She now has pink flesh arms. Her head is painted in shades of green. I adjusted the shadow for the TV tray next to her.

Same view as the full H frame one just minus the H frame. This one has the white light on that I use while painting. Mrs. Daniels looks washed out a bit this way, I think.

Worked another hour on Mrs Daniels, bringing me to 20 hours of work... or 13 hours of painting after 7 hours of prep.

I worked more on the background and on the shadows. Next up is probably Mrs. Daniels's blouse.

The scrubby aspects of the background --- all that dry grass now recently flooded is more filled out. I need to go back and add the highlights to some areas of the grass and clean up the birds.

              Bombay Bazaar

I have a collection of about ten thousand vintage slides: half of them are ones my family (or I) took. The other half are ones I've purchased and scanned.

I use them as source material for some of my more complex pieces. This one will be a 1960s market scene from Gibraltar — except the people will be chicken people.

I have a digital collage (1 hour or so of work) that I am now carefully tracing (1 hour 17 minutes and counting)

Intricate line tracing of a street scene - only about 1/3 complete.

Three weeks ago, I was this far in the initial lining for my next street scene with chicken people. I should have shared it but didn't for some reason I have forgotten.

A pink, blue, and orange outline of a 1963 street scene from Gibraltar.

Tonight I worked more on the line work, the stuff you won't see once the actual drawing is done.

Save for a car and some foreground figures I am done with this step. This line work represents 2.5 hours of work, plus another 2 hours of digital collage prep-work.

Same street scene near the Bombay Bazaar in Gibraltar, July 1963. Most of the chicken people are visible now as is the street and shops. Missing still: a car and some figures crossing the street.

I finished the lines last night but forgot to share my progress. Now I am colouring in the sunlit area of the street.

Dark gray background with brightly coloured lines to create the sense of a street scene in Gibraltar. Now there's a diagonal slash of cream that brings a sense of sunlight to the scene, covering the top third of the page. There are some bricks and the start of shutters.

I haven't worked on any digital art in a fortnight because I was traveling. I do sometimes bring along an iPad but this trip I wanted to focus on my watercolour painting.

Now that I'm home, I've worked another hour on "Bombay Bazaar."

I spent an hour working on the windows and shutters at the top of the drawing. The wall is cast in bright white sunlight. The shutters are open to reveal darkened interiors. The wood is painted a hunters green but looks almost mint ice cream coloured where the sunlight hits the edges.

Bombay Bazaar - 4.5 hours of drawing now. I'm treating this one almost like a watercolour. I'm intentionally avoiding perfectly straight / clean lines.

When I do these complex digital pieces it's so tempting to aim for precision / perfection but that won't work here. The source photo (minus the chicken people) is old and somewhat degraded with time. If I aim for recreating exactly what I see I'll be representing the slide and not the moment the slide captured.

More windows and shutters drawn on the bright top third of the buildings.

The balcony I worked on is in the top right corner. If you zoom in you'll see how absolutely scribbly shit it is. The shop sign is in the middle of the sunlight wall and looks pretty good, if I do say so myself.

We're getting into the ugly duckling phase where early layers of paint look sloppy and the extreme colour differences between the base layer and the top layers makes it hard to photograph.

Over the reddish background is now a layer of light blue although in this photograph it looks more like an off white. The edges of where I painted are covered with painters tape. The bird shapes are pretty much obliterated by this first layer of sky paint.
