schmonz.com is a Fediverse instance that uses the ActivityPub protocol. In other words, users at this host can communicate with people that use software like Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, etc. all around the world.
This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.
NetBSD is the only BSD without a Vulkan stack (Mesa and Lavapipe), but that’s about to change. The effort to bring Vulkan to NetBSD is now in beta, with prebuilt binaries coming soon. Mesa configures, compiles, links, installs, and registers the Lavapipe software Vulkan driver on NetBSD 10.1 amd64, against LLVM 19.1.7. The driver (libvulkan_lvp.so, ~17 MB) installs into /usr/pkg/lib, and its ICD manifest (advertising Vulkan API 1.4) installs into /usr/pkg/share/vulkan/icd.d/, so a Vulkan loader on the system can discover it. ldd resolves every dependency cleanly. The entire process โ environment setup, dependency builds, the Mesa build, and installation โ is automated end to end and reproducible on a fresh install. โซ vulkan-netbsd GitHub page It’s important to note that the next step in the process is to port the Vulkan loader, which is required to actually run Vulkan applications. This entire effort is still ongoing and seems to be handled mostly by Dean Howell alone, so expect breakage and incomplete documentation as development progresses. Still, this is a hugely important effort, and seeing it this far along is great news.

Vulkan-netbsd brings Vulkan to NetBSD

๐ Introducing BSD.cafe ๐
Excited to present the first building block of the BSD Cafe project! When I registered this domain months ago, I envisioned a themed bar where we can casually chat about *BSD systems, Linux, and Open-Source technology among friends, acquaintances, and patrons. But like any bar, discussions can cover a wide range of topics while respecting everyone.
BSD.cafe will be a hub for various tools and services, powered by *BSD.
The first brick is a new Mastodon instance, a gateway to the Fediverse. Registration is open, and the server will be moderated under clear guidelines promoting good behavior and zero tolerance for hate towards anyone. Inclusivity, respect, and constructive dialogue are the key values of this new instance.
The main server is currently hosted in Finland on a small VM, based on #FreeBSD. Services are divided into VNET jails, connected in a LAN via a local bridge. A VPN system is also present and have been able to move individual jails to different, more powerful, machines.
Multimedia data and cache are hosted on another physical server (FreeBSD, within a jail), with Cloudflare in front. The aim is to cache and geodistribute data, reducing network traffic on the main VPS.
Reverse proxy (frontend), mail server, media server, and the instance itself are reachable via #ipv6.
The instance started empty. No unnecessary content was pre-loaded; I want it to grow organically based on users' interests and following. There won't be any preemptive blocks at this stage. Users are encouraged to promptly report anything they find worth flagging.
Join us at https://mastodon.bsd.cafe to build a constructive and inclusive communityโa safe and relaxing space for everyone.
Our wiki, located at https://wiki.bsd.cafe, features essential links and articles related to the BSD world. It provides an overview of the tools, services, rules, uptime, and more information about the BSD Cafe Services.
A Matrix server, a Miniflux RSS Reader, the Wiki itself, and the BlendIT Lemmy instance are all part of the BSD Cafe services, with more to come.

boostedIt's standardized to the extent that the escape sequences are valid, now. It's just up to the implementation to choose, from the two choices, and to document what they do.
With issue 7, using those escape sequences in a BRE would have made it ill-formed.
There's a fair amount of stuff in the world of POSIX and C and C++ where things are implementation-defined. It's a distinct thing from not actually being standardized.
The sad thing is that HP-UX will likely never be fixed. But #Illumos and #OpenBSD could be. They're both #HenrySpencer-derived, like #NetBSD and #FreeBSD, and dropping in that part of the Evans code for those three escape sequences wouldn't be that hard.

boostedIt would be interesting to trace the relationships, if any, between the twain.
Here's something for your doco: Pendleton's actual shar posting to comp.unix.wizards in 1988, complete with UUCP bang paths in the signature block.

Notice that Pendleton did VMS emulation before emacs.

Also note that the BSDs have cfmakeraw(3) available in the C library.

#NetBSD #pkgsrc 2026Q2 is now fully underway.
Thereโs no easy way to move a kernel from NetBSD to an AmigaOS partition, so I had to xz it, split it, copy it over using MS-DOS disk images using a Gotek with FlashFloppy, then join and xz -d on the Amiga side.
#m68k is really taking off! The virt68k port that @thorpej has made is nothing short of amazing. It can now compile practically anything in a VM with 3 gigs of memory and 4 gigs of swap, faster than a real m68060.
This lets us compile large packages that werenโt previously possible or that required a lot of manual tweaking, like llvm-21.1.8, clang-21.1.8, webkit-gtk-2.36.8nb29.
More to come!

NetBSD turns 33 this Sunday! ๐ฉ
To celebrate 33 years of clean code, portability, and zero bloat, Challenging the rest of the fediverse to help hit this year's funding goals.
Also do drop a screenshot of your uptime, uname -a, or a pic of the weirdest hardware you've got running NetBSD right now. (RockPro64 NPF routers or Pi's hooked up to retro CRTs highly encouraged).
