Had lunch at Qué Tal with Dolan, Dutton, Grauer, and recent alumnus Joe. I don't get to see Joe as much as I would like: he is busy studying at the Ohio College of Podiatry, and I am not exactly lacking for things to fill up my time. It has been strange to have been involved in the fraternity for so long and only become a brother recently; one source of sadness for me is that a lot of the guys who got me going are gone now, or will be moving out next semester. Joe is one of these guys. The house has changed before my eyes, and I am only just getting started. Bittersweet.

Dave canceled our little OpenBSD “installfest” due to inclement weather. Really. It was raining, his car was unavailable, and he understandably didn't want to carry computing equipment outside in the rain. So he stayed home and did it himself.

Henry and I chatted for a long time on the phone about a lot of things. He works hard at being who he wants to be, and sometimes even the gratification of achieving one's intended character fails to outweigh the fatigue of the effort. He needed only acknowledgment that the fatigue is to be expected from time to time, and is not a signal to stop. I think that I was able to render him this service. While many of our values are dissimilar, we share a strong desire for self-improvement, and I think this is what makes us get along as well as we do. That, and that he is one of the funniest people I know.

When I finally got him off the phone, he came over to watch one of my favorite movies, Johnny Dangerously, which stars Michael Keaton as the immigrant son forced into a life of crime to pay for his mother's operations. It is very, very funny, and the only movie I own. Some other folks came downstairs to watch as well and got a good time for free.

After the movie, Hank and I went to Presti's Donuts. He often pronounces them “dognuts”, but this is wrong in the case of Presti's (and Dunkin, for that matter). In fact, I can't remember the last time I saw anything advertising doughnuts. This is almost certainly because of people like Henry.
