The T driver made announcements in the style of an airline pilot. The general reaction of the passengers was a smirk. I was amused. It was a bit too early in the morning for me to do more than smirk.
Softnet Systems finished moving out of the office space, leaving us precious few chairs. I sat on an unopened box containing a new Power Mac G4, while I worked on my own Power Mac G3 which has been watered (thanks to a window left open to the rain at night) and coffeed (due to someone trying to handle two non-spillable items at once). I want my machines to be at home, where they're treated nicely and are far more convenient for me. To do this, I need an office computer.
I thought I had a hankering for the A Street roast beef dinner, then thought of the Thai place and went there with Pedro instead. It was either not there, or hard for an American to locate. We walked down the street and found a Vietnamese place with a name of some sort. I had a strawberry-coconut shake that, while very good, could have used a bit more coconut; pork with rice and veggies; and lychee fruit served in ice water. Yum. The couple sitting across the table must have been listening to our conversation, because the guy asked if we were working for an Internet startup. When we told him yes, and what we do, he asked if we used PHP3. Pedro and I tried to figure out whether he was just guessing well (Internet startups are everywhere, and PHP3 is quite popular) or creepy. I think he guessed well.
I hardly got any work done all day. I hate reporting my progress to Mike at the end of the day as “not much”. But I had to fix some problems that came up and help people with stuff. It doesn't help matters that I am not settled in by any means; I have yet to move into my own place.
I left work a bit early to check out the house and pick up the key from Val. The “double” that Peter and I will have is not so big at all. Luckily, we're next to the living room, where I surmise that we'll stash a desk or two. Still, tight. I wonder what the singles are like. Also, we'll need to buy an air conditioner.
Thinking simple — like Chopin, or even Satie — resulted in a lovely melody which I think I will work with some more.
I won't be moving tomorrow, as originally hoped. I'm shooting for Friday.
