Peter: arriving late tonight in HP North. Gabe's coming from Madison and meeting us tomorrow noonish. At that time, if we are not already in Chicago, we'll go there and do something fun or other. Gabe has in mind to look at a particular clothing store on the Mile that is rumored to be fairly fashionable yet inexpensive (I'm interested, too, having heard this), and I'm very curious to walk through the Apple Store (Gabe's seen it before, but would go again). Sunday, Christina and I are going to the Bears game at noon, and most likely departing immediately thereafter.
I'm now supervising Premier Technical Support at Case Western Reserve University.
I was looking for a home fileserver with RAID-1 that'd be small and quiet, hoping there'd be something ready-made. I found the PUG Vault, and after inquiring within, I'm impressed. It's software RAID, which NetBSD does very well; they're using commodity parts such as Western Digital IDE drives, so I can buy a spare for when one dies (hard drives hate me); there's a PCI slot so I can add gigabit Ethernet later, if it proves worthwhile; and I don't have to put it together myself. It's a small company and they're responsive and friendly. I ordered the $699 120GB model.
