I'm in New York City. Having a fine time. Yesterday, I hung out briefly with a couple NetBSD guys, rode on the back of a motorcycle for the first time, got a sense of Columbia and their School of General Studies (both of which look fantastic for me), and walked from Battery Park to Columbus Circle where my sister joined me for dinner. Today I'll pick a few sights to see in more detail, then meet up with more NetBSD guys for their weekly drinking at d.b.a. The long walk gave me a sense of the scale of Manhattan and a blister under my right big toe. It also served to make the city feel less intimidating. I think I could like living here. Or at least near here.
This weekend there will be a pair of family get-togethers to celebrate my aunt and uncle's 50th wedding anniversary and his 70th birthday (and also his health, which is hugely improved after a long-awaited kidney transplant a year or so ago). The family shindigs are the real reason I'm here, but as long as I was at it I decided to sandwich some vacation days to see the city and hang out with my sister some. Sadly, I'll miss a flag football doubleheader on Sunday; happily, I'll miss only one strength training workout (tonight's).
Awaiting my return to Cleveland on Monday: 12” PowerBook, 40GB iPod, AirPort Express, and Palm Zire 72.
Awaiting my return to work on Tuesday: job offer from the Case-sponsored IT startup company. Then I get to think all about whether it's what I want to do.
