Schmonzcast #5: “How poignant is Ophelia's Song, its bleak simplicity shorn of all sentimentality,” writes pianist Hamish Milne in his foreword to Dover's edition of the complete skazki. On Friday after lunch I found the door to Barnard's mythical Steinway magically unlocked. Happy my birthday to us! Here's Ophelia's Song, another Medtner skazka in F minor, this one a few years older (dating from 1906-07). Is Milne “dancing about architecture,” as they say, or has he found the right words?
while my ears aren’t nearly as well trained as yours, or as some others, that piece is beautiful! i had it playing while preparing for some depositions and it just stopped me, almost caught me. i put down the files and was just calm. i’m impressed and quite pleased that you’re sharing.
