We’re back from our usual holiday sojourn in Germany, where Taavi had a completely enjoyable time with uncles and grandparents and occasionally some kids to play with. We time-adjusted quickly on arrival, and despite an unexpected stay at an airport hotel in Frankfurt — or perhaps somehow because of it — we adjusted quickly again on our return to New York. While in Germany, as it happened, I got to meet one of my notqmail co-conspirators in person. It also happened that I got sick (current best guess is migraine) while Eike and I were at the cafe and had to cut our visit short. And so instead of hopping on a train the next day to go hang out with friends from my 2018 coding tour, I didn’t. A responsible choice, yet also a disappointing result not to get to see Alex and Zeb until next year. As some measure of compensation, our Frankfurt layover made it possible to meet up with Tobias, which was brief but really nice.

Non-time-zone-related adjustments to being back home have been harder. There’s a bit too much going on all at once, including Paul the cat suddenly looking rather old. Life goes on, including the fact that it inevitably won’t.

We give no quarter, draw our plans our best,
And execute them while we have the chance.
