Teammate on most recent team gave me this parting feedback: “I learned a ton, we got lots done, our team dynamics were awesome, and I’ve never felt this kind of team feeling before.”

If your business makes software, I might be good for your business.

16 years ago, I got invited to perform. I felt very wobbly about accepting.

I had a teacher at the time, so I played the side-project piece for him.

He said “You love this music, and the way you play it, you give other people the chance to love it too.”

What a gift he gave me.

@deborahh I have no special talent and in particular very little technical training or awareness, and at least to me my limitations are loud and clear in most music I make. On the flip side, I have what my teacher told me when I last had a teacher oh, 16 years ago. He said, talking about a larger Medtner work I spent two years on, “You love this music, and the way you play it, you give other people a chance to love it too.” What a gift that was.

@deborahh Very. Devs usually don't update dependencies until they need a particular new feature or bugfix, probably because dependencies are always threatening to break your code and it's scary to change anything about them. (That's my favorite working definition in this context, BTW: "dependency" = anything that's not your code that can break your code.)

So the XP-inspired courage challenge here is stop averting our gaze from that fear and start applying our forebrains and our programming skills to address each factor that contributes to our fear. When we've done that, then we can instead feel eager to update dependencies the moment we see them, knowing that we'll find out quickly and safely if they introduce a problem, instead of slowly and dangerously.

If I have a book in me, it's about managing software dependencies. 🙂

@deborahh truish! For musicians trained in the "Western art music" tradition, this notation is a lingua franca; for others, it's foreign. And advanced Western-art-music education invariably includes one or more of Italian, German, French, Russian, some others. Even though I didn't get music education that advanced, I could tell you what every one of those Italian words means, and I think that's true of most musicians with handwave roughly my level of experience.
